Before we attempt to counter-condition any behavioural issues we need to ensure that the dogs’ innate needs are met. Initially we always ask if the dog is medically sound. Then we discuss the importance of the dog being fed a good quality food and them receiving the correct amount of exercise and mental stimulation for their age and breed. Usually one, two or even all three of these aspects are not met.
We also need to praise and correct our dogs in the correct way and at the point of the behaviour or up to 2 seconds later.
