About this course
Separation anxiety is diagnosed in around 15% of behavioural cases and we are dealing with many of more of these post lockdown. This disorder may manifest due to genetics or a species predisposition but is often caused at the early learning stage and by owners inadvertently rewarding this behaviour.
Separation anxiety is a behavioural condition where a dog suffers with severe anxiety upon being separated from their owner. Separation anxiety is a challenging condition to treat, as of course we are not there to counter our dogs anxiety.
From watching this video, you will be equipped to resolve this incredibly distressing condition in your dog. We will cover:
- Why do dogs suffer with separation anxiety? – This disorder may manifest due to genetics or a species predisposition but is often caused at the early learning stage and by owners’ behaviour. This condition is about the relationship between you and your dog, unfortunately the simple solution of getting another dog doesn’t work!
- Fulfilling our dogs innate needs – We always look at a dog as a holistic being. For our dogs to be content it is important that their innate needs are met. Dogs are a product of good food, exercise and mental stimulation, appropriate for your dog’s age and breed. These factors have to be met according to your individual dog, otherwise Separation Anxiety behaviours will be exacerbated.
- A treatment plan – For most dogs with Separation Anxiety the hardest time for them is immediately after you leave. Their anxious and often destructive behaviour occur immediately as you leave. They recognize our patterns of behaviour and become anxious at this point. Therefore, we need to desensitize our dog by changing our routine.
- Leaving routines to help counter the condition – We show you practical demonstrations on how to resolve Separation Anxiety. Focusing on the timing of interactions from the owner, leaving routines and the responses of the dogs.
- Real life case studies
Separation anxiety is a challenging condition to treat, as we are simply not there to counter our dog’s anxiety.
Countering this condition is a multi-dimensional. We need to ensure that a dog’s innate needs are met, the owners need to introduce leadership techniques, they need to be practicing leaving routines and providing their dog with interactive toys to occupy them with whilst they are out.
A mixture of all of these and time to practice will counter separation issues within your dog.
As with all of our videos, you can watch this as one full video and also in bitesize sections.
