About this course

The decision to welcome a puppy into your family is exciting, yet often a little nerve racking. Puppies are wonderful bundles of energy and truly serve to enrich our lives. In order to ensure that this relationship starts in the best way, it is vital for new owners to understand the different stages of development that puppies got through and how to communicate with them effectively.

In a world where there is so much conflicting advice, we have filmed this video as ‘The Complete Puppy Guide’ to ensure you start this journey on the best footing and to prevent behavioural problems occurring later in life.

The video comprehensively covers everything a new owner needs to know in order to give you reassurance and support you need at this time. We believe in setting boundaries and guidelines with pups from the outset. We need to engage them in mental stimulation and appropriate exercise for their age and breed. We are massive advocates of starting training as early as possible – they are never too young to learn!!

  • Basis of puppy behaviour – Before starting to train our pups, a full understanding of their innate needs at this age is important. This includes the correct balance of food, exercise and mental stimulation. We highlight the five main rewards for dogs in order to shape their behaviour correctly and their critical periods of development, such as the period of socialisation and habituation.
  • Puppy training in the house & garden – We demonstrate all the basic training commands and show how to do this with four different puppies. We teach the Sit, Stand, Down, Stay, Wait and Look and explain the importance of training within the house, followed by the garden with increased distractions. We show you how to train your pup to walk to heel, which is teaching your dog to walk by your side without.
  • Common behaviour problems – We discuss the main behavioural problems owners encounter at this time with their puppies and give you advice on how to counter them. We talk about puppy proofing your house, how to stop their chewing, the correct leads and collars to choose, how to stop mouthing and jumping up and the different legal options to travel safely with your puppy.
  • House training – We offer you a detailed plan on how to encourage your puppy to wee and poo outdoors.
  • First nights – Advice on different options for those first few nights in order to settle pup as quickly as possible and to facilitate your pup needing the loo!
  • Leaving puppy alone – Start as you mean to go on! The importance of leaving your puppy for short periods of time from the outset.

Through completing this course, you will be equipped with all the answers you need for understanding puppy behaviour and how to shape your puppy into the perfect pet for you!

As with all of our videos, you can watch this as one full video and also in bitesize sections.
